Food waste

NSW Environment Protection Authority

CONTEXT

Helping NSW residents ditch food waste. The NSW Environment Protection Agency’s Love Food Hate Waste (LFHW) campaign uses behavioural science best practice to combat the issue of food waste in NSW homes.

Context

Food waste is a huge environmental challenge and a major contributor to climate change. Here in NSW, 1.7 million tonnes of food are wasted each year and households are the largest contributor. Love Food Hate Waste (LFHW) is the EPA’s flagship food waste education program that works with businesses and households to stop food waste at the source.

OUR WORK

Our Work

From 2017 to 2023, Horizon delivered LFHW’s multi award-winning content creation and social media strategy.

Behaviour change science was central to our approach, combining behavioural insights, social trends and highly shareable waste-free recipe content.

RESULTS

Results

The campaign resulted in exponential growth in awareness. The LFHW Facebook page has grown from 17,900 followers in 2019 to more than 65,000 to date and the Instagram page from 1000 to more than 14,800.

In 12 months, the campaign achieved a total reach of 1.37 million and engagement of 66,700. The LFHW 2021 Awareness and Value survey of NSW residents revealed campaign cut-through, recall and behavioural change state-wide. 76% of respondents described LFHW as a very good brand for promoting food waste reduction, 71% acknowledged the program’s influence in motivating them to reduce food waste and 54% remembered LFHW materials in the prior year.
